
Author, Writing consultant, clinical audiologist
N'Gadie Roberts is an Australian author, poet, and copywriter whose work spans literature, performance, opera, visual culture, education, and local government.As an artistic leader, she guides writers and interdisciplinary projects, shaping work that explores myth, cultural commentary, the gothic, and the politics of voice. As a writing consultant, she provides technical writing advice for philanthropic organisations, emerging writers, and marketing agencies, translating complex ideas into precise, resonant writing. Over the years, Roberts’ expertise and mentorship have enabled artists and organisations to achieve award-winning and internationally recognised work, reflecting a career defined by both creative vision and strategic guidance.Roberts' words have been translated into Dutch and featured across a range of literary journals, platforms, and cultural institutions, including SHOWStudio, Westerly, Cordite Poetry Review, Insider Guides, Cygnus Biology, The Howard University Writer's Guild and Perth Festival to name a few.In 2024 Roberts' poem, Mami Wata was recited by actress, Cynthia Erivo, and featured in the The New York Metropolitan Museum of Arts (The MET)'s spring exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The poem formed part of a site-specific installation created in collaboration with fashion photographer Nick Knight, situating Roberts’ writing within a major international museum context.She has also given her time and creative expertise to opera and large-scale performance, volunteering as a librettist on the United Kingdom’s first Black and Asian led production of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. The production received a formal letter of endorsement from His Majesty King Charles, marking a significant moment in the re-contextualisation of canonical European opera.Roberts' practice is grounded in academic training; she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Cultural Studies and a separate Honours degree in English specialising in Creative Writing from The University of Western Australia. A gothic enthusiast, her dissertation explored the use of Freud's Das Unheimliche (The Uncanny) to convey experiences of trauma in contemporary gothic fiction. In 2019 a short story developed from this research was peer-reviewed and published by Monash University Publishing Australia.Alongside her creative practice, Roberts holds a Master of Clinical Audiology from the University of Western Australia, and has worked as a clinical audiologist across regional and metropolitan areas in Australia.Roberts also worked in Cambridge, England for several years as an adult and paediatric audiologist. While in Cambridge, she specialised in Auditory Processing Disorder in both adult and paediatric populations, served as Lead Judge for the 2024 Youth Speaks Debating Competition, and presented original poetry at CB1 Poetry.Her professional experience includes serving as a court-appointed interpreter for the Western Australian District Court, and contributing to education, mentoring, and community support, including the Western Australian Department of Child Protection and Family Support. She has founded creative writing clubs, led workshops, and provided strategic guidance and leadership in both creative and intellectual spaces.In 2022, Roberts was honoured with the Western Australian Emerging Young Leader Award, recognising her outstanding contributions to both the literary and healthcare sectors. The award was presented by the African Australian Organisation of Western Australia in partnership with the Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts, Edith Cowan University, and West Australian Police.Currently, she continues to work across writing consultancy, audiology and interdisciplinary collaboration.
